How to Make a Castile Body Soap
I have been using shower gel or body wash for as long as I can remember. Bar soap makes my skin feel gross and it creates way more soap scum in the shower. I'm also quite loyal to my brands so when my local shop phased out my favorite, I wasn't sure if I would ever be clean again. Until I came across a recipe using Castile soap.
Castile soap is natural, vegetable-based, mild soap safe on all surfaces.
Most people are probably familiar with Dr. Bronner's which is basically name brand Castile soap that you can use for just about everything. I have a generic Castile soap used to make all Naturally Clean's home cleaning products. It's unscented so I can add any essential oils I like or leave it as-is. Keep in mind, essential oils are concentrated and can cause skin irritation. If you have never used essential oils, test a little on your skin first. Here's what you'll need to make your own body soap:
2/3 Cup Castile soap
1/4 Cup Raw honey - yes, honey. It adds a little lather to the mix.
2 tsp oil - (jojoba, almond, grapeseed, sesame, or olive)
1 tsp Vitamin E oil
50-60 drops Essential oil (I like sweet orange because it is also not phototoxic)
This is a good starting point to test different oils and essential oils.
Oils have different properties that you may be drawn to like jojoba for example, is the most similar to our natural skin oils. You can also blend different essential oils if you are feeling adventurous. I'm a purest so I stick with orange because I have always been draw to the fresh clean scent; it's almost energizing to me. I like to double this recipe and it nearly fills up a 16oz bottle.
Aside from Castile soap and the essential oil, I bought all the additional ingredients at my local Trader Joe's. Use the funnel to pour all the ingredients into a clean bottle. I up-cycled an old body wash bottle and removed the label. You may need to heat the honey a little until it is runny enough to pour into the mix. Once you have mixed everything, give it a good shake, and you are ready to get clean!
